Case Study — Navitas Enhances Semiconductor Testing Capabilities with ipTEST M2 Generators and MPI TS2500 Probe System

Scaling SiC Testing with ipTEST m1 and MPI TS2500

Enhancing Efficiency and Precision in High-Volume SiC Chip Production

Founded in 2014, Navitas is at the forefront of SiC and GaN power semiconductor technology, revolutionizing power electronics with highly efficient, compact solutions for everything from fast chargers to electric vehicles. By prioritizing rigorous device testing, Navitas ensures the reliability, performance, and safety of its groundbreaking semiconductors, setting new industry standards and earning the trust of customers worldwide. This dedication to quality is why industry professionals consistently choose Navitas for their most demanding power electronics needs.

This commitment to quality and performance has made Navitas a
preferred partner for high-end power electronics solutions globally.

Integrated Semiconductor Testing Solutions for Scalable SiC Manufacturing

To expand and strengthen its semiconductor testing capabilities, Navitas has deployed the ipTEST M2 testing platform, seamlessly integrated with two MPI TS2500 wafer probers. This combination forms a high-throughput, fully optimized wafer test cell, purpose-built to meet the demands of high-volume SiC chip manufacturing.

This strategic investment reflects Navitas' ongoing commitment to excellence in semiconductor testing, delivering measurable gains in testing precision, operational efficiency, and throughput.

The integrated system enables the testing of approximately
40,000 to 50,000 SiC wafers annually,
supporting a projected  $250 million in revenue.

This capacity elevates Navitas to a new level of operational efficiency and industry leadership in chip manufacturing.

Collaborating for Success: A Joint Focus on Performance, Flexibility, and Cost Efficiency

Throughout the project, ipTEST and MPI collaborated closely to ensure a seamless integration that met Navitas’ technical and operational objectives.
Their joint efforts centered around three key focus areas:

  • The teams began by clearly defining the test strategy: what test plans would be implemented, what test resources were required, and how the system would integrate into existing factory infrastructure. Particular attention was given to identifying any manufacturing defects to capture and performance indicators to monitor.

  • Both MPI and ipTEST are committed to ongoing innovation. In this case, the ability of the ipTEST M2 system to perform high-accuracy leakage testing at speed provided a distinct competitive edge in throughput and reliability.

  • The chosen configuration, a single ipTEST tester operating two MPI TS2500 probers, offered the lowest cost of test while maintaining performance, scalability, and quality control. This setup proved to be the most efficient solution for Navitas’ high-volume SiC testing environment.

A Strategic Choice Backed by Performance

Navitas conducted a thorough evaluation of multiple testing configurations before selecting the ipTEST–MPI solution. The decision was driven by the platform’s proven ability to deliver high-speed, high-accuracy test performance, paired with the precision and reliability of MPI’s wafer probing systems.

The combination of the ipTEST M2 tester and MPI TS2500 probers offered a best-in-class solution for Navitas’ advanced testing requirements—balancing throughput, flexibility, and cost-efficiency. This robust test cell configuration not only met the company’s immediate production needs but also positioned it for long-term success in the fast-evolving power semiconductor market.

Positioned for the Future of Power Semiconductor Manufacturing

This deployment represents a significant milestone in Navitas’ production strategy. The new test cell not only supports current output goals but also provides the scalability needed for future expansion in the semiconductor industry.

The ipTEST high-voltage platform supports up to 10kV and streamlines testing by combining on-wafer UIS (avalanche) and DC measurements in a single pass—something most systems require two separate steps for. Troubleshooting is straightforward, with minimal setup and built-in waveform capture offering valuable insight into test results. The included hand test fixtures are useful for identifying issues and setting up test plans efficiently. Test execution is fast, and the software is designed to make programming and binning clear and accessible. Running ipTEST in a Linux environment also supports automation, allowing integration with Python scripts and common freeware tools for data analysis. Overall, this setup has significantly improved the efficiency of our high-voltage testing and automation workflows.
